Umpiring Update
"Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work."
- Peter Drucker.
For the Love
Umpired for a couple of teams last night. Both lets just say did not meet "Varsity Standards" rag tag, and for the most part many of the players told me at one point or another that it was their first or second year playing. What really caught me off guard besides the lack of knowledge of the rules, was how all of them knew that they were not going to go pro, or even past high school.
As far as we all know it is nearly impossible for any player to ever make the professionals but to admit that in high school is a tough thing for a student to do. Most of the students athletes had little trouble with calls. They seemed to be playing just because they enjoy the game. Which really struck me in the middle, as much as many players say that they coach or play just for the game to really see that was an interesting dynamic.
Today's Slate
- Suppose to umpire but assuming that is going to get cancelled because of the weather.
- Coaching tonight as well, depending on the umpiring game.
- Beginning of the season is always difficult you want to set the right tone with players. Not too tough, but also stress accountability. Hoping that the rain cancels the game, and allow us to practice. If not we will be a week behind with our cancellation on Saturday too.
Matchup Of The Day
- Really want to watch Jose Fernandez from the Marlins pitch today. Haven't had a chance to watch him this season yet. He will take on the Mets Vs. Mike Pelfrey.
